NFL Commissioner Goodell Still Opposes Sports Betting

At a recent NFL owners meeting NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell re-affirmed that the NFL is opposed to legalizing gambling on sports on the federal level.  Currently, Nevada is the only state that has legal sports gambling on single-sport events.  Nevada also just approved a $750 million in public financing for the Raiders to move to Las Vegas.

Former MMA Fighter Diagnosed With CTE

Former Bellator MMA fighter Jordan Parsons was diagnosed with CTE.  A drunk driver hit Jordan Parsons six months ago at the age of 25.  After examination from a medical doctor he has been publicly identified with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease made infamous by the documentary League of Denial.  The first person to discover CTE, forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, performed the examination on Parsons.

WWE Providing Guide To UFC Expansion In China

Breaking into the Asian market has been a holy grail for many sports organizations.  Collegiate football games have been held in China, boxing matches held in Macau, and some of the best NBA players make yearly trips.  For the UFC, a solid footing in countries like China could elevate the UFC to a level that just ten years ago would have seemed beyond optimistic.  The WWE is currently blazing a trail into China and given the similarities between the UFC and the WWE, the professional wrestling organization might be making a blueprint for the professional mixed martial arts company.

AdWeek Profiles UFC Before New York City Debut

The UFC will host their first event at Madison Square Garden in November.  Professional mixed martial arts was previously illegal in the state and was the last state to legalize the sport.  With Conor McGregor at the top of the fight card the debut event in New York City could set financial records for the company.  AdWeek, a news outlet that covers “media news, including print, technology, advertising, branding and television” wrote about the company and its growth over the last decade.

Rounda Rousey Returns at UFC 207

The wait is over.  Ronda Rousey will return to the octagon on December 30, 2016 to challenge UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.  Today, Dana White announced that Ronda Rousey would fight at UFC 207 on Colin Cowherd’s show “The Herd.”  Ronda Rousey’s title shot will come a year after she was knocked out by Holly Holm in the second round of UFC 193.  The loss to Holm was the first of her UFC career.  Rousey opens as a -320 favorite over Amanda Nunes.

Goldman Sachs Allegedly Warned By Feds About UFC Buyout Debt

When the UFC was for sale and eventually purchased by WME-IMG, Goldman Sachs marketed the debt.  The Federal Reserve cautioned Goldman Sachs about the risks of taking on so much debt.  The Federal Reserve has been monitoring Wall Street to ensure that banks are following the lending guidelines created in 2013.

Between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016, the UFC recorded $142 million earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (Ebitda).  Goldman Sachs marketed the Ebitda value after the purhase to be $298 million with adjustments for cost savings and expectations in more revenue from licensing.

Report: Premier Boxing Champions Might Be Low On Money

Dan Rafael of ESPN did an investigation into the current state of the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC).  After an analysis of the decreasing purse amounts for fighters and the fewer television events that the PBC has put on, Rafael has concluded that the PBC might be low on money.

Last fall there were many fights during a week and the fancy elements of showmanship, such as the stages, have since been missing from production.  Rafael also states that the quality of the fights have been decreasing.  The PBC only has two programs set to air on cable the rest of the year.  Both programs will air on Spike.  With the lower-level fights and drops in payment there are fewer top fighters performing.

Nate and Nick Diaz Tape Show With Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain is a famous chef who travels the world showing the different foods of the world.  He has run shows such as “No Reservations” and “Parts Unknown.”  He has appeared on the Travel Channel, CNN, and others.  Anthony Bourdain tweeted out a photo of himself with Nate and Nick Diaz while they were taping for a new episode of “Parts Unknown.”

British Boxing Success Due To Elite Amateur System And Local Stars

Some of the best fighters in the world hail from Britain.  Tyson Fury is currently the heavyweight champion of the world and one of boxing’s up and coming stars, Anthony Joshua, is also from Britain.  There are two factors that are largely considered to be the most vital in producing star fighters.  First, fighters like Ricky Hatton created a surge in popularity and the fighters who were inspired by Hatton have now reached an elite level.  Second, the amateur system is well-funded with many excellent trainers.
