According to K2 Promotions the Golovkin-Wade fight on HBO recorded 1,325,000 viewers, making it the most watched boxing event on HBO.
Golovkin knocked out Dominic Wade in the second round of their fight.
Tom Loeffler, executive director of K2 said:
“We’re very happy with these ratings for Gennady which have continued to see extraordinary growth since his first fight on HBO in September 2012. As he continues to sell-out arenas in America and garner the top sponsorships in boxing with the Jordan Brand, Apple, Tecate, Bijan and Samsung, among others, it’s clear that Gennady is one of the most marketable fighters in the world.
Also on the card was debatably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, defeat McWilliams Arroyo. That fight had 1,001,000 viewers.
The ratings are further proof that Gennady Golovkin is approaching superstar status. He has already made multiple trips through general sports shows and has received sponsorships from Jordan, Apple, Tecate, Bijan, and Samsung.
It will be a sad day when he makes the jump to PPV but these numbers show that the jump could be happening sooner than later.
