Former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor have had ongoing discussions about a potential fight and rumors have started that the fight is almost agreed upon. Mayweather told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that the fight was getting “very, very close” to happening but then posted the above Instagram post this afternoon.
According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto:
Sources confirmed to ESPN that McGregor arrived in Las Vegas on Monday evening. Mayweather lives and trains in Las Vegas.
Nevada State Athletic Commission chairman Anthony Marnell confirmed to ESPN that the commission has been made aware of active negotiations between the two camps, but said the fight still faces several challenges.
Conor McGregor flew to Las Vegas and posted this Instagram photo shortly after. Floyd Mayweather lives and trains in Las Vegas. McGregor is currently trying to make amends with the Nevada State Athletic Commission after a press conference that ended with McGregor throwing energy drinks into an audience, targeting Nate Diaz. Conor McGregor has been granted a boxing license in the state of California but needs a license to fight in Nevada to fight Floyd McGregor.
UFC President Dana White said that an agreement between McGregor and Mayweather is not close to happening and would have to go through him first.
There are a wide variety of factors that need to take place for this fight to occur. First, McGregor needs to be re-instated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and then be granted a boxing license in the state. Some say that McGregor could be re-instated and granted a boxing license next month.
The UFC currently has the rights to Conor McGregor fights. McGregor’s contract with the UFC will state whether that applies to all combat sport competitions. If the UFC has exclusive rights to his fights then the UFC would have to sign off on the fight and co-promote it with Mayweather Promotions. If the UFC were to not allow Conor McGregor to fight Mayweather in a boxing match then McGregor could file a lawsuit saying that he is a contractor and should be able to compete in a boxing match.
Then the two parties need to make an agreement on how much each fighter will be paid. Mayweather has said multiple times that he will only fight with a guaranteed $100 million purse and McGregor is demanding the same. Mayweather will claim that he will get paid for and set the rules because he is the A-side fighter, which McGregor will clearly object to.
It’s an instance like this where we see fighting become a spectacle more so than a sport. Some people will tune in to watch two dynamic personalities fight each other and some will watch to see a UFC fighter take on a boxer. With both names involved the fight will generate a lot of revenue even though the fight will be likely uncompetitive.
In my opinion this fight is still a long ways from happening. Mayweather is benefitting from his name entering the sports news media again and McGregor is able to test his market value and enhance his own brand image.
